FEATURES

What is a feature? A feature refers to a specific design element or material treatment added to improve the outerwear garment’s performance – whether it’s keeping you dry, warm, ventilated, or protected from wind. Features can work individually or be combined for greater effect, depending on the intended use of the jacket.

Our outerwear is designed with one or multiple technical features, each playing a specific role in protecting you from the elements.

WATERPROOF, WATER-RESISTANT & WATER-REPELLENT – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

When it comes to staying dry, not all fabrics offer the same level of protection. All our down and puffer jackets are treated with a water-repellent treatment, BIONIC-FINISH®ECO, as well as most of our light textile jackets and coats.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the three most common terms used to describe how well a garment can handle rain and snow:

WATER-REPELLENT

The fabric has a special surface treatment that makes water bead up and roll off, instead of soaking in right away. It offers basic protection against light rain and snow for a short time.

→ Example: BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is a water-repellent treatment.

WATER-RESISTANT

This provides better protection than water-repellent. It can handle light to moderate rain and snow for a while, but it’s not fully waterproof. Water may eventually seep through during heavy or prolonged exposure.

→ Example: Our water-resistant garments are made with laminated fabrics and treated with BIONIC-FINISH®ECO, giving them reliable protection against light to moderate rain and snowfall.

The lamination adds an extra barrier that helps prevent water from soaking through, while the treatment helps water roll off the surface.

WATERPROOF

This is the highest level of protection. Waterproof garments are designed to keep water and snow out even during heavy, continuous rain or snowfall.

→ Example: When a garment has a fabric with a water column rating of at least 5,000 mm and taped seams, it offers a high level of water protection.

BIONIC-FINISH®ECO

BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is a DWR (Durable Water Repellent). All our down and puffer jackets are treated with a water-repellent treatment, BIONIC-FINISH®ECO and most of our light textile jackets and coats.

This organic treatment is applied to the fabric, creating a slippery surface on a molecular level. This makes water bead up and roll off the garment, rather than soaking in. The treatment not only makes the fabric water-repellent but also helps protect the jacket from stains and dirt.

BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals like fluorocarbons, formaldehyde, and paraffin, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

After wash it’s important to reactivate the BIONIC-FINISH®ECO treatment again by heat treatment, dry tumbling, according to care lable.

LAMINATED FABRIC

Lamination is a process where two different fabric layers are pressed together under heat to bond them on a molecular level. The outer fabric acts as a barrier against water, while the inner fabric helps protect the membrane from sweat and friction from your body.

TAPED SEAMS

Some of our garments feature taped seams. This means that the seams of the laminated fabric are sealed with special tape or a substance to prevent water from getting through. Taped seams provide extra waterproof protection, especially in areas where water could otherwise enter, like all stitching and especially the shoulder seams.

BREATHABILITY

Good breathability adds comfort to your garment by allowing sweat and heat to escape. A breathability test measures how quickly moisture from your body can pass through the fabric and into the air.

WINDPROOF

Windproof garments are designed to block air from passing through the fabric. This is done by using either tightly woven textiles or laminated fabrics that stop airflow.

Windproof performance is measured by how much air can pass through the fabric under pressure – the lower the airflow, the better the wind protection.
